On July 4th of this year, the Jackson County, Missouri Parks and Recreation Department sponsored a concert. The Romantics were the headliner, most well-known for the song “What I Like About You”. That got me thinking about why people live where they do, and why they like where they live. Therefore I decided to start a series using “That’s What I Like About You” as the theme – but pertaining to living in Lees Summit, Missouri and the Kansas City, Missouri area.
The first thing I did was put a post on Facebook asking people what they like about living in Lee’s Summit. What are their favorite things to do, or places to go. The response I got was very surprising — and insightful. While some noted physical places or things (the Lakes, Longview Christmas in the Park, Thanksgiving fireworks, etc.), the biggest response was… The People! And those who most often responded with that answer? It was those Facebook friends that no longer live in Lee Summit.
So today’s shout out goes out to …. The People of Lee’s Summit!
Lee’s Summit is a city of just under 100,000 residents, but has uniquely managed to maintain small town feel. We have a thriving downtown where (literally) Main Street runs through it. We have excellent schools and a vibrant parks systems. Neighborhoods host neighborhood events, and people are always willing to help those in need. I guess being neighborly is the best way I can describe the people that live in Lee Summit.
In the weeks and months to come I will continue this series, which I call “Livin’ in Lee’s Summit”. I will introduce you to the the history, the lakes, the parks, the schools, and the events in and around Lee’s Summit. Each story will help you to learn about this city that I call home. For those thinking of moving to Lee’s Summit, Missouri or the Kansas City metropolitan area, I hope you see value with these posts. And if there is anything in particular you are curious about — or want more information on, please leave me a comment, or contact me at 816-213-0938.
