Happy New Year!

Getting organized is always a top New Years’ resolution. So, this year we are going to work together to make that happen!  Each month I will share organizational tips and tricks.  We’ll work room by room, as well ask keeping on top of monthly household tasks.

Since it is time to take down Christmas decorations, that’s where we will start. For this task you will need plastic tubs, paper, tape and a label maker or marker to label the tubs.

As you take down your decorations, examine each ornament, decoration and string of lights. If it is damaged -throw it out. If you don’t think you’re going to need them again – give them away, throw them away, whatever you need to do to get it out of your house.

The next step is to store the items you are keeping into tubs. I use green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, etc. Visually that’s an easy way to see which tubs you’ll need for the appropriate holiday.  You will need to label each tub by holiday and tub number (Xmas 1, Xmas 2, etc.)

Tape a piece of paper to the tub. As you add an item to that tub, write it on the paper taped to the tub.  Once it is full and everything is listed on the tub, you can take a picture of the list and keep it in your phone, on your computer, or wherever you want to store the information.

By doing this now, decorating will be so much easier next year.  Or if you want to use your lights (you know, you a little white twinkly ones) for a 4th of July party, you can go to your list and say, “Oh, those are in tub number five.”

Then you go get box number five and you get what you need. THEN you put them back when you are finished with them, and they’ll be there for Christmas.
