I recently had a client ask me that question while looking at a home. My immediate answer was no, the subdivision doesn’t have any – but Lee’s Summit, Missouri is VERY well connected. In fact, there is a path at the front of the subdivision!
In 1988, Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department developed a comprehensive city-wide greenway master plan. The objective was to maintain and protect open space while responding to the needs of recreational trail users. This would include bicyclists, hikers, walker, runners and other non-motorized activates. The 38-mile planned loop will encompass Lee’s Summit and the surrounding area. Over 100 miles of neighborhood connector routes are planned along roads, parks, and bodies of water. The project is far from complete, but the city plans on adding 4-8 miles of connector routes each year.
As a result, Lee’s Summit was recently upgrade from Bronze to a Silver Level Walk Friendly Community for its walkability initiatives and programs by the Pedestrian & Bicycle Information Center.
If you are not familiar with Lee’s Summit, it is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and the 6th largest city in Missouri. We are a sprawling city almost 66 square miles in size, so the Greenway Plan is essential for the enjoyment of the community. There are numerous public and private lakes and almost 30 public parks in the Lee’s Summit area.
There is also talk of ultimately connecting the trails of Lee’s Summit to the massive Katy Trail. The Katy Trail is presently about 240 miles long spanning from Pleasant Hill across the state of Missouri to the St. Louis area. Connecting to the Katy Trail would be a real game changer for trail users!
